Text 1: The great Gatsby – Jay gatsby

Gatsby has built up a completely new life so hee can be with Daisy

Q1:  ‘I am the son of some wealthy people in the middle-west—all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition.

Q2: His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people—his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God—a phrase which, if it means anything, means just that—and he must be about His Father’s Business, the service of a vast, vulgar and meretricious beauty. So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year-old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end.

Text 2: the wonderful wizard of oz. He is neither wonderful or a wizard

Q1: But then Toto, Dorothy’s dog, discovers that the Wizard is no god. … When Toto rips the curtain to the side, the Wizard of Oz realizes he’s been found out, and tries to cover it up by shouting over his loudspeaker, “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!”

Q2: I might not actually be a wizard.

Connection: they have both made a persona that they are great however this is far from the truth. They have both created the illusion of being great.

Text 3:The lost decade

Q1: Mr. Trimble’s been away a long time. Or he feels it’s a long time — almost twelve years. Some people would consider themselves lucky to’ve missed the last decade.”

Q2: Jesus,” he said to himself. “Drunk for ten years.”

Connection: These stories both have a connection because they are both about not everyone is who they seem as Trimble has actually been drunk for 10 years and Oz is not actually a wizard but instead just a normal man using smoke and mirrors.

Text 4 – the land lady

Q1:  “Please come in,” she said pleasantly.

Q2: Holding her teacup high in one hand,
inclining her head slightly to the left, she
looked up at him out of the corners of her
eyes and gave him another gentle little smile.
“No, my dear,” she said. ‘Only you

Connections: Both Trimble and the landlady have secrets. The land lady is secretly poisoning her customers and Trimble has been drunk for the past ten years. Both of them are not who they seem to be.
